ab: The article discusses the role of code and reading comprehension instruction in literacy instruction for English learners (EL). The authors discuss research indicating that ELs can become literate in English even if they possess limited oral language skills and that their reading development progresses similarly to that of native speakers (NS). Phonemics and phonics instruction can aid in reading development. Code-based reading interventions designed for NS can be utilized for ELs by incorporating visual education and gestures. The reading comprehension of ELs may be affected by their previous knowledge and the content of reading materials. Teachers may improve comprehension by supplementing EL knowledge with a synopsis of reading materials.
