| Sumario: | The article presents an account of the Ahmedabad Declaration on Industrial Design for Development, a design manifesto issued at a conference in Ahmedabad, India in 1979. An overview is provided of the historical background of the manifesto. The study of design in India is traced back to the collaboration of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the American designers Charles and Ray Eames. The Eames' "India Report," published in 1958, recommended a National Institute of Design for India, which was subsequently founded in Ahmedabad. The contributions of Le Corbusier and Louis Khan to the city, as well as its association with the activist Mahatma Gandhi, are also noted.
