An overview is provided of the historical background of the manifesto. The study of design in India is traced back to the collaboration of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the American designers Charles and Ray Eames. The Eames' "India Report," published in 1958, recommended a National Institute of Design for India, which was subsequently founded in Ahmedabad.
