U.S. consumers have adopted the Internet more quickly than any previous communications technology, says Clemente. Online research and e-mail have become essential tools for students, businesspeople, and millions of home users. In addition, the existence of affluent, technically proficient baby boomers who are used to buying on credit might mean that Internet commerce has a bright future.
