| Sumario: | Artificial intelligence, information technology, and virtual reality will dramatically change human existence in future decades, but the future is too important to leave in the hands of the technologists alone. Many scientists, researchers, computer programmers, culture watchers, and futurists think that in the next 40 years a phase of sudden, rapid, and unprecedented technological progress will be entered into, caused partly by the ability of machines to better themselves using artificial intelligence. The Acceleration Studies Foundation calls this future period the Singularity. It will be exciting, dangerous, and totally unlike anything mankind has ever experienced before. How some of the technologies that comprise mankind's daily life are shaped could be crucial to passing safely through the forthcoming period of radical change. If people are willing to try, a future Singularity can be created that is wise, democratic, and sustainable. It will be open: transparent, participatory, available to everyone, and filled with an abundance of choices.
