Many scientists, researchers, computer programmers, culture watchers, and futurists think that in the next 40 years a phase of sudden, rapid, and unprecedented technological progress will be entered into, caused partly by the ability of machines to better themselves using artificial intelligence. The Acceleration Studies Foundation calls this future period the Singularity. It will be exciting, dangerous, and totally unlike anything mankind has ever experienced before. How some of the technologies that comprise mankind's daily life are shaped could be crucial to passing safely through the forthcoming period of radical change. If people are willing to try, a future Singularity can be created that is wise, democratic, and sustainable.
