| Sumario: | The writer discusses the measures that the Left must take in order to organize Americans against capitalist greed and misery. The political “Rainbow Coalition” of the early 1980s that united leftists, environmentalists, feminists, African-Americans, and other progressives was possible because the different groups had gotten beyond identity politics in which each was worried only about its own situation. Any future leftist electoral movement will have to encompass a similar coalition of groups and foster a similar mutual recognition. The Left must not give in to the conservative backlash, and it must understand the differences of race, gender, age, and ability that exist among the disadvantaged in society.
