The political “Rainbow Coalition” of the early 1980s that united leftists, environmentalists, feminists, African-Americans, and other progressives was possible because the different groups had gotten beyond identity politics in which each was worried only about its own situation. Any future leftist electoral movement will have to encompass a similar coalition of groups and foster a similar mutual recognition.
