A study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of using a computer-based, networked collaborative knowledge mapping system in order to measure teamwork skills. The nature of interactions between team members as they jointly constructed a knowledge map was examined, and teamwork processes were measured by examining message usage. Messages were categorized as belonging to one of six team processes: adaptability, communication, coordination, decision-making, interpersonal, and leadership. No significant correlations were observed between team processes and team outcomes, which may be partly due to a split-attention effect resulting from the design of the user interface. It was noted, however, that students were successfully able to construct knowledge maps using the system proposed. This suggests that the general approach proposed to using networked computers to measure group processes is still viable given existing alternatives.
