A study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of using a computer-based, networked collaborative knowledge mapping system in order to measure teamwork skills. The nature of interactions between team members as they jointly constructed a knowledge map was examined, and teamwork processes were measured by examining message usage. Messages were categorized as belonging to one of six team processes: adaptability, communication, coordination, decision-making, interpersonal, and leadership. No significant correlations were observed between team processes and team outcomes, which may be partly due to a split-attention effect resulting from the design of the user interface. It was noted, however, that students were successfully able to construct knowledge maps using the system proposed.
