Sumario:Part of a special issue on afterschool computer programs for children. The writers discuss the external help and internal support that was needed to create a computer club at the Douglass Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois. After the end of the first school year, a small independent community had grown around notions such as self control, scaffolded learning, and community service. The computer club, if continued, could help achieve a great deal in its second year, as it holds potential both as a club and as a force to help create school community and attain the school's academic goals.
