| Sumario: | Part of a special section on the psychometric assessment of couples, marriages, and families. A study was conducted to assess the utility of the Reliable Change Index (RC) for evaluating the effectiveness of preventive interventions. Data were drawn from 99 newlywed couples who were assigned to a Learning to Live Together, a Growing Together, a Training in Marriage Enrichment, or a control treatment group. Results revealed that in addition to supporting the same outcome findings as an analysis of covariance, the RC scores suggested that the outcome of the various treatment programs may differ in other ways when the proportion of cases reporting reliable change was considered. Moreover, the RC procedure featured a bidirectional analysis that allowed for the examination of both positive and negative changes. It is concluded that the RC appears to have utility for evaluating outcomes in preventive intervention with nonclinical groups.
