| Sumario: | Heather French, Miss America 2000, has devoted her term to advocating decent housing for homeless veterans, and one of the facilities that she endorses is the Maryland Center for Veterans Education and Training (MCVET). The center, which was established in 1993, rehabilitates homeless veterans and is funded by a variety of federal and state agencies, donations, businesses, organizations, and events. MCVET provides different types of care, including a 50-person capacity “drop-in” room, a 50-bed emergency shelter, a 120-bed transition facility, and an 80-bed single room occupancy apartment building. Although confined to MCVET grounds for the first 30 days, residents have a range of services, including a cafeteria, medical clinic, library, computer room, and exercise room. The center tolerates no drug or alcohol abuse or misbehavior and residents are required to attend Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
