Summary:Part of a special issue on the latest science and practice regarding food and nutrition for healthier aging. The writers offer an overview of the issues addressed in this special issue. They note that nutrition is examined from both health care and social-service perspectives; consider the role of nutrition in maintaining health; discuss available food and nutrient recommendations and guidelines for Americans throughout the lifespan; identify the shortages and excesses in older adults' diets; highlight expert advice on how to meet nutrient needs in daily meals; and distinguish sources of nutritional information. They conclude that the contributing articles draw from the latest research and practice to build a convincing argument why older people should make every bite count and to provide the knowledge and information that can help them do so.
