The writers consider an approach to the examination of mortality and longevity limits when survival data on related individuals with and without observed covariates are present. They maintain that the method blends the concepts of demography and survival analysis with methods of quantitative genetics and genetic epidemiology and that it permits them to examine the genetic structure of frailty in the Cox-type hazard model with random effects. They describe the application of this approach to survival data on Danish twins, and they then assess the resulting lower bounds for biological limits of human longevity. Finally, they consider the limitations of this approach and outline directions for additional research.
