| Sumario: | Part of a special section commemorating 40 years of Polity. The writer reflects on the experience of being the editor of Polity between 1994 and 1999. During this period, the editorial direction of the journal was shaped by a conception of Polity as one of several “habitats” within the political science “ecosystem,” each of which offers a space where certain types of academic examination of politics could be encouraged through publication. Due to the movements of academic analysts among the possible methodological contentions, Polity was sometimes a relatively sparsely populated habitat, and sometimes more crowded. The writer concludes by hoping it can continue to persist as a shelter for philosophically informed, historically sensitive, qualitative inquiry.
