During this period, the editorial direction of the journal was shaped by a conception of Polity as one of several “habitats” within the political science “ecosystem,” each of which offers a space where certain types of academic examination of politics could be encouraged through publication. Due to the movements of academic analysts among the possible methodological contentions, Polity was sometimes a relatively sparsely populated habitat, and sometimes more crowded.
