| Sumario: | A study was conducted to investigate the processes of translating English words into Japanese and Japanese words into English. Data were drawn from 10 students at Hiroshima University who were native speakers of Japanese and who had learned English since beginning junior high school. The word-word translating task, in which the semantic effect between target and distractor is supposed to be demonstrated when the target word is semantically processed, was employed. The findings failed to reveal the semantic effect, supporting the process of translation predicted by the word association hypothesis, which maintains that the word represented by one language is translated into the other language directly.
