| Sumario: | The writers discuss how neuronal signaling in the hippocampus is predominantly influenced by excitatory, glutamatergic neurons. They point out that the firing of these neurons is modulated by a relatively small number of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-containing interneurons. They state that hippocampal function is determined by the balance between GABA-mediated inhibition and excitatory pyramidal cell firing. They conclude that glutamic acid decarboxylase is the rate-limiting enzyme. |
