Data were obtained from 16 native German students who were asked to write down as many of 180 presented German nouns as they could remember. Findings indicated that during reading, a word's emotional connotation is spontaneously activated immediately after its assembly of its visual-word-form representation. Findings suggested a physiological basis for the effect of emotional content during reading and indicated that this may contribute to the emotions experienced in reading an absorbing novel.
