| Sumario: | Part of a special section on the Asian Innovation Awards 1999. Researchers in Japan have pioneered translation technology that promises to break the language barrier. The technology offers real-time translation via phones or personal-computer terminals. A team from Advanced Telecom Research Interpreting Telecommunication Research Labs have a standard PC-based program capable of translating approximately 80 percent of conversation from Japanese to English and vice versa. The program is capable of surmounting stylistic errors and vocal clutter. |
