| Sumario: | The purpose of the present review is to describe ESM, to illustrate its use in aggression research, and to examine methodological issues related to its use. Application of the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) to the study of chronically aggressive psychiatric inpatients is discussed. ESM is a tool that allows investigators to explore the relationships between aggressive and other behaviors, situational variables, and internal states, and is designed to provide an ecologically valid account of day-to-day experience. ESM allows for the sampling of behavior, thoughts, and feelings of persons across time and situations. Participants wear beeping devices programmed to signal at random times. When signalled, subjects are asked to complete a questionnaire describing their current activity, location, thoughts and feelings.
