Application of the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) to the study of chronically aggressive psychiatric inpatients is discussed. ESM is a tool that allows investigators to explore the relationships between aggressive and other behaviors, situational variables, and internal states, and is designed to provide an ecologically valid account of day-to-day experience. ESM allows for the sampling of behavior, thoughts, and feelings of persons across time and situations. Participants wear beeping devices programmed to signal at random times.
