ab: There is a struggle between booksellers and retailers for market share of the book industry. Prices, fueled by publishers' variable discounts, has been the key in the acquisition of maximum market share. It has been suggested that retailers automatically assume that they can increase their base terms following which they will expect complete discounts. Discontent over retail discount has been worsened by the activities of book clubs and several direct sales operations. What is required is an absolute transparency in transactions made by publishers on titles. Due to displacement of retail sales there is a negative impact on stockholding booksellers. In conclusion, it is hoped that publishers will eventually accept that it is not in the interest of anyone to sell competing book titles to booksellers and direct sale operations.
