Sumario:The article focuses on Itlay based-Olivetti SpA, one of the leading information technology company. The firm was restructuring, cutting its workforce by 40% and removing layers of management. But it was also refocusing, by trying to expand in selected businesses such as ink-jet printers. And it was also reinventing itself, by learning new trades, such as cellular telephony and forming alliances with foreigners. Olivetti became flabby during the mid-1980s. Olivetti's ranking as Europe's number-one PC manufacturer has brought more pain than pleasure. PCs account for 20% of the group's sales, but its losses on PCs are running at around 10% of the revenues the business generates.
