El artículo analiza cómo la educación sanitaria se desarrolló en la Zona Central del Ecuador en las décadas de 1940 y 1950, momento en el cual el Departamento de Educación Sanitaria experimentó un impulso significativo. Así, en una primera parte se aborda la conformación de esta dependencia y las actividades que desplegó mediante el uso de conferencias, películas y folletos; y, en una segunda sección, se hace un acercamiento a la educación sanitaria para las enfermedades venéreas, examinando luego los folletos producidos sobre la sífilis como ejemplo de la forma en que el conocimiento médico se transmitió a la gente.
