Pupillometry is a method for online measurement of pupil dilations, which indicates an immediate and implicit reaction, e.g. to linguistic stimuli. Aims: The present study aims to discuss the applicability of pupillometry for language assessment. Methods: In a pilot study with children aged 5 to 6, 13 children with typical language development who have mastered the acquisition of subject-verb agreement as well as three children with DLD were tested with the help of a computer-assisted experiment. For this purpose, grammatical and ungrammatical linguistic stimuli were presented in the form of subject-verb-object sentences. Results: The results show that the children reacted differently to the ungrammatical versus the grammatical sentences (operationalised by pupil changes). Conclusions: Possible fields of application of the method and its limitations are discussed.
