Summary:This article cites studies which demonstrate the effectiveness of behavioral modification methods using tangible reinforcers with special populations including retarded pupils. Most of the studies were designed to include one level of social class and one level of reinforcement. Researchers and practitioners assumed that tangible reinforcers are appropriate for the lower class. It was found out that there is a social class difference in response to reinforcement. Children from the lower-class prefer material reinforcers. On the other hand, children from the lower-class respond more favorably to intangible reinforcement.
