| Sumario: | What light can clinical thinking throw on the place of mechanical devices in the teaching of advanced reading skills? In this article the Director and Associate Director of Harvard University's Bureau of Study Counsel present a clinical rationale for a developmental reading program at the high school and college level. They trace from this rationale—in which reading habits are considered to be ‘expressive acts of personality’, and such matters as ‘short eye span’ are related to ‘dependency in the personality and authoritarianism in the culture’—their design of the Harvard Reading Films, Series Two, now widely used throughout the country. Mr. Perry and Mr. Whitlock, on the basis of their experience in applying the insights of the clinical counseling of students to the conduct of developmental reading programs, designed these improved films with support from the Graduate School of Education. This is their report.
