Sumario:With the ethical turn of literary studies reaching its peak in the 1980s, the field of translation studies was prompted to debate the best approaches to translating the socio-cultural component inherent in every literary text. Some argued that the genius of the original text must be preserved at all costs, even at the expense of the translation's fluency, while others challenged the concept of "untranslatability" and questioned the notion of translation difficulty based solely on literary genre or language. Literature written in the fantastic mode contains an extra layer of interpretation, the complexity of which depends on how strongly the fantastic is culturally embedded. Drawing on examples from Osamu Dazai's Seihintan, this article engages different perspectives regarding the translation process and illustrates the cultural decoding of literary translations from Japanese into Romanian.
