| Sumario: | The article focuses on conclusions and implications from a broad range of research in elementary schools. One primary line of investigation focuses on individual differences in students and on how they affect teacher expectations, attitudes and behavior. Several studies indicate that teachers' expectations can function as self-fulfilling prophecies. Self-fulfilling prophecies occur when teachers treat low expectation students by expecting less from and teaching less to them. Other studies concern teacher effectiveness, particularly in producing student learning gains. Several studies concluded that teachers have no effect in student learning. There are problems in the conceptualization and design of studies which support this conclusion and it is now clear that the conclusion is incorrect. |
