| Sumario: | The article discusses the features of academic organization in the U.S. The academic function is believed to be the promotion of learning in a cognitive sense. In order to achieve successful learning, there must be a mastery of tradition of the previous accumulation of knowledge and of experience in the ways of successfully pursuing knowledge. Should the academic system be differentiated around the function of learning, any social accountability must be secondary to the sense of responsibility for the promotion of the learning process. The problems in the academic system revolves around issues concerning financial support and on the human services at the level of academic professionals, administrators and students as well as the set of institutional arrangements that facilitate learning.
