Sumario:The article discusses a study on the catalytic mechanism of an aspartic proteinase, explored with neutron and x-ray diffraction. Aspartic proteinases have a proven therapeutic effect in the treatment of AIDS. Mechanistic proposals were made based on X-ray diffraction studies. The results suggest that the transition state is stabilized by a negative charge on one of the catalytic aspartate residues.
