| Sumario: | Part of a special issue on afterschool computer programs for children. The writers discuss contexts that promote self-determination, interest, and learning. They draw on eight narratives, each reflecting unique characteristics of a particular afterschool or out-of-school computer program, to identify a number of unifying themes. They present these themes as questions that merit exploration by those invested in these “club” settings. They ask about the conceptions of learning held by writers, look at the distinctions between learning about and learning with technology, and question the degree of choice needed to sustain the engagement and interest portrayed in the narratives.
