      ab: Part of a special section on aging. A study was conducted to explore age and the allocation of attention across the time course of word recognition. Subjects were younger and older adults who performed lexical decisions on ambiguous words, unambiguous words, and pseudowords and simultaneously responded to an auditory probe presented at stimulus onset asynchronies of 90 ms, 180 ms, or 270 ms. Findings revealed that word meaning has an influence on the allocation of attention similarly for younger and older adults. However, it was found that older adults suffer a cost and become disproportionately slower in processes associated with response coordination and output.
