      ab: A study challenged the notion that motivation is seen as denoting the strength of a person's desire to achieve a goal. Data were obtained by making participants squeeze a handgrip to win the greatest fraction possible of each subliminal incentive that was materialized as a coin image flashed in one visual hemfield. Findings indicated that motivation effects were seen only for the hand controlled by the stimulated brain hemisphere. Findings suggested that in the absence of conscious control, one brain hemisphere, and therefore one side of the body, can be motivated independently of the other. Findings are discussed in detail.
