Sumario:This article reports that both International Business Machines Corp. and Compaq Computer Corp. are planning offensives against the price-cutting raiders who have been taking their market share. They have powerful weapons: manufacturing economies of scale and big, well-trained distribution networks. Firms such as Dell Computer promote and distribute their wares direct to the customer. They also provide direct service, giving technical advice over the telephone and shipping replacement parts by overnight mail.
