Sumario:In France, school is compulsory until age 16, and all students follow the same curriculum from primary through lower secondary school. Yet national and international surveys reveal wide gaps in school achievement across social backgrounds, which educational policies have tried to address. Are they succeeding? Using survey data from the French Ministry of Education, the authors measure students' academic performance at the beginning and end of lower secondary school, demonstrating that social inequalities are reinforced throughout students' school careers.
