| Sumario: | The article examines the historicity of the discourses on crisis and problems in education within the public debate. We propose an approach to studying the relationships between crisis, change, and education focused on recovering their historical character. The research on which this article is based examined four episodes in the history of education in Uruguay spanning almost a century. In these, we considered: the place of teachers as both a problem and a solution to the crisis in secondary education in the 1930s; the uses of the idea of crisis by primary school teachers' unionism in defence of public education in the early 1940s; the emergence of the social sciences as an expert knowledge for diagnosing problems in the education system during the generalised crisis in the country in the early 1960s; and the crisis of education as a central issue in public discussion and polarised political confrontation towards the second decade of the twenty-first century. Each episode revisits a debate in which education was discussed in terms of crisis or in relation to diagnoses of its shortcomings. |
