| Sumario: | This article focuses on the importance of individual instruction to students in the U.S. It is interesting to note that at the very beginning of reading instruction, reading was taught exclusively on the individual basis and not as a matter of philosophy but as a matter of expediency. There were no schools or classrooms or classes. Each child was taught as an individual by a scribe, a priest, a tutor or some member of his family. Even in early dame schools in the U.S., each child was taught individually and progressed at his own rate. Hence, these events happened before mass education in the country proliferated.
